The chink we use today is a latex acrylic product that is made to resist UV damage, flex with the logs movement and seal out water and bugs among other things. To install this new modern chink, the old chink needs to be removed. This is usually a labor intensive, painstaking endeavor.
As the old chink is removed, care must be taken to shim the logs as the chink may have provided some structural support, also, care must be taken to not damage the logs or the interior chink. Once all of the old chink is removed, and the area cleaned out, a cellular backer rod is applied. This backer is custom cut to fit the gap and has a “grip” so to hold the chink. The air gap left between outside and inside creates insulation. We generally use chink in larger gaps or to emulate mortar.
Caulk
Caulk is usually used in smaller joints and checks and around doors and windows. It has to be resistant to UV, and the best are latex based.
Silicone caulks do not work. They break down and fail. Log home caulks have the elasticity and longevity that the other style caulking products lack. We are trained how to prepare for and install the correct caulk or chink on your log home.
Some homes have or require a caulk, some use chink in between the log courses - some on the exterior only, some on both interior and exterior.
After applying log caulking in between the joints of the logs. We also caulked the face of the crowns and any checks on the logs larger than a 1/4" located on the upper half of the log. These checks can hold water and cause your logs to rot. We used log builder caulking with 1/4" backer rod applied between the log joints before caulking. This helps to maintain a proper seal and ensure that the caulking will only adhere to 2 points on the log. This log home restoration project was a 1920's era log cabin.
